A collaborative artist retreat on the shores of beautiful Lake George

Set in the summer resort community of Lake George, New York and surrounded by the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains and the shoreline of beautiful Lake George itself – the Lake George Music Festival (LGMF) is a collaborative artist retreat for advanced young professionals. Musicians attend solely as a way to advance intellectually, artistically, and professionally; working closely together in a tight-knit community and nurturing atmosphere.

LGMF bridges the gap between faculty and students – there are no teachers or students, private lessons, master classes or organized studios. Rather, our unique roster of like-minded peers collaborate together in chamber music ensembles, a full orchestral setting, and cutting-edge concerts; providing a destination for classical and new music for Lake George locals and visitors.

Performances and rehearsals take place in a variety of venues throughout Lake George. Meals and other musician community functions take place in Lake George’s centrally located St. James Church. Space is available here to rest and relax as well as for practice.

A delicious, healthy, pot-luck style lunch is served in St. James’ Tuttle Hall daily, prepared by our team of community volunteers and host families; free for musicians. There are always snacks, fruit, and beverages available, and we have kitchen facilities available for personal use.

Informal social gatherings from boat cruises to hiking trips where participants bond with colleagues of past and present are a major aspect of the atmosphere. The Festival also offers yoga classes, massage therapy, tea time, and other activities. Our historic facility and community hall, all enhanced by the beautiful surroundings make a residency at Lake George a fulfilling and treasured opportunity.

The repertoire performed at the festival is selected from requests submitted by participating musicians. Each participant can be assured to have an active and rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule and will typically perform in two chamber pieces, one large ensemble, and in the festival symphony orchestra.

Participants are provided free lodging with a local host family or in a local hotel. Lunch is provided daily and all participants receive an honorarium of $300 to offset travel costs. Additional funds are available for those flying with large instruments. LGMF participants are not paid to perform and must attend for the full festival.

Lake George is open to musicians at any stage of professional development to whom a residency would have a meaningful impact on artistic development and provide refreshment and inspiration. Generally there are 50-60 musicians in residence, typically between the ages of 21 and 35.

Musicians are invited to Lake George on the basis of an audition. Enrollment is limited to the number of musicians needed for a symphony orchestra, plus pianists and vocalists. Auditions are judged solely on the basis of artistic merit.
